I entered this school terrified. I had never written an entire novel, never sat with literary rock stars and talked about objective correlatives and/or narrative arcs and/or the basic elements of a good strudel. I was terrified that I didn't belong. That fear didn't last long.
I graduated Vermont with three books under contract and a literary tool box that I still use every day. More importantly, I graduated the program still deeply in love with the craft of writing. The faculty is outstanding, brilliant and loving. The student body is kind, sharp, and dedicated to the craft and to each other. I can not recommend this program enough.
I only wish it lasted longer than two years.
Advice to Prospective Students:
Tip #1: Apply.
Tip #2: If you get in? Go!
Tip #3: Experiment with genres. Try everything.
Tip #4: Kathi Appelt always says to write like your fingers are on fire. Don't stress or buy a fire extinguisher. This is actually a good thing.
