Without doubt, my years spent in the NMSU MFA program have been some of the best, most memorable, and most productive of my life. I can't think of a better way, as a writer, to earn a greater appreciation for art, as well as foster friendships within a supportive, inspiring community of other writers. The third year of the program, devoted to completing a creative thesis, is such a luxury, but it's only one benefit among many, including an incredibly supportive faculty and staff, and the opportunity to teach a 1/1 course load as a Graduate Assistant.
Las Cruces is a really laid-back town that offers low rents and fantastic Mexican food. The landscape is intriguing and fun to explore. It's truly a physically beautiful place.
The program, unlike many MFAs, is not grossly competitive, though there are plenty of opportunities to apply for awards and scholarships. The friendly, yet productive, atmosphere makes for three years of seriously fun writing.
Advice to Prospective Students:
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have attended this program. I hope you'll do the same. Come for a visit.
