Program Description
The International Institute of Modern Letters is New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious creative writing programme and our graduates are now among New Zealand’s leading contemporary writers.
The Master of Arts in Creative Writing is a one-year full time graduate research degree which encourages writers to identify and develop their own distinctive voices in their chosen medium. Weekly workshops and meetings with supervisors are key elements of the programme. We also host seminars and masterclasses with local and international visiting writers.
The MA is offered in two streams:
Writing for the Page (jointly directly by Bill Manhire, Chris Price and Damien Wilkins): 20 students write in their chosen genre – poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction – as well as undertaking an extensive reading programme. The final portfolio submission is a book-length work of literature, of publishable standard.
Scriptwriting (directed by Ken Duncum): 10 students write for the screen, stage or radio. Students also spend about 40 hours in industry placements. The final portfolio submission is a full-length script to third-draft standard.
