Program Description
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing is a graduate-level program offering concentrations in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction (with the opportunity to study other genres of writing such as screenwriting). The program emphasizes the craft of writing and concentrates on the student's original work. The MFA requires 45 hours of coursework and typically will take three years for the student to complete. Our goal is to help MFA students to produce publishable theses and secure teaching or editing positions upon graduation. Students will have the opportunity to study with five full-time faculty members in creative writing, all of whom have won national awards for their novels, short stories, and poetry. Our online literary magazine can be found at http://www.sawpalm.org. Students also will have the opportunity to be exposed to the perspectives of writers and editors brought to campus by the English Department, the University Lecture Series, and the USF Humanities Institute. Writers visiting our campus over the past few years include Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike, Augusten Burroughs, Louise Gluck, and Billy Collins.
