Program Description
The MFA International Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas is a three-year program with sustained emphasis upon workshop, theory and seminar experience. Each of our students spends a minimum of 10 weeks abroad in a non-Anglophone country, often making use of the time to complete our program's translation requirement. Our emphasis is always international and inter-disciplinary, and writing and critical thinking beyond one's own genre of preference is strongly encouraged. Once admitted, virtually all MFA students receive a graduate teaching assistantship which covers 80% of all tuition costs in addition to paying a monthly stipend.
Our faculty include Dave Hickey (nonfiction), Claudia Keelan (poetry), Donald Revell (poetry and translation), Douglas Unger (fiction) and Richard Wiley (fiction). Recent visitors include Russell Banks, E.L. Doctorow, John Irving, Kay Ryan and Charles Simic. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is also home to The Black Mountain Institute which sustains a vital community of international writers on campus.
