Program Description
The University of Mississippi, located in Faulkner’s hometown, boasts a solid program in reading and writing, the cornerstone of an author’s craft. We specialize in what we do best—fiction and poetry—and supplement our specialties with courses such as eco-writing and creative nonfiction.
The MFA in Creative Writing is a rigorous program, enrolling only a handful of students each year, and these students must complete 36 hours of course work. The English Department offers a limited number of Grisham Fellowships in Creative Writing, and teaching assistantships are also available.
The Visiting Writers Series, made possible by the Grisham Fund, allows us to host some of the most accomplished writers working today. Students are also offered opportunities to hone and display their writing skills, such as working with, and publishing in, our literary magazine, The Yalobusha Review, and participating in the MFA reading series. Poets & Writers Magazine posted our program in the country’s top fifty, and The Atlantic Monthly rated the University of Mississippi’s MFA in Creative Writing among its top five up-and-coming programs.

When I think back to my time as an Ole Miss MFA, it's like thinking back to my mother's warm…
