University of Massachusetts-Amherst MFA Program for Poets & Writers
Average Overall Rating
Program Description
The University of Massachusetts MFA Program for Poets & Writers is one of the oldest MFA writing programs in the country. It is a three year course of study, requiring 60 credit hours, including four workshops in your chosen genre and one workshop in a secondary genre, at least three courses in modern and contemporary poetry and fiction, and 6 thesis hours. 18 of the credit hours are designed with the help of MFA faculty to pursue individualized study in fields such as publishing, the practice of teaching, arts administration, and literary history and aesthetics. The program hosts a visiting writers series and the Juniper Literary Festival. Each year the program offers a few fellowships to incoming students, but most students seek stipends and tuition waivers through Teaching Assistantships. If a student earns enough money in a given year (approximately $3600) in a position related to his or her course of study (which does not necessarily have to be on-campus), the Graduate School will provide him or her with a tuition waiver.
