Program Description
Texas State offers a 48 hour, studio/academic degree in fiction and poetry. Many of our graduates are well trained teachers, who find excellent teaching positions after graduation, as they publish work in journals, as well as their first books. Our faculty members are superb, not only because of the quality of their writing and their teaching experience, but because of their devotion to working with students to make them the best writers they can be.
Our community is supportive; everyone is friendly. As Director, I make it a point to know each student individually whenever possible. Our outstanding visiting writers program brings 6-8 major writers each year, all of whom conduct workshops and Q & A's for MFA students only. You can view videos of them on our online literary journal Front Porch. Recent, year-long visiting faculty members have included Denis Johnson, Li-Young Lee, ZZ Packer, Robert Stone, and Barry Hannah. Tim O'Brien is a permanent faculty member.
We are located 25 miles from Austin. If you join us, your three years here will introduce you to fellow writers who you will be able to share your work with for the rest of your life. That's the best gift our program can give you.
