Rutgers University-Camden MFA in Creative Writing
Program Description
The Rutgers-Camden Master of Fine Arts in creative writing is a 42- credit terminal degree in the theory and practice of writing – the first of its kind in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area.
What makes the Rutgers-Camden MFA different? We think that writers in one genre can learn from writers in another-- poets from fiction writers, fiction writers from memoirists, and memoirists from poets. Our unique multi-genre approach prepares our students not only to write poetry and prose but to teach at the college level. MFA students interested in pursuing academic careers have the option of taking graduate courses in Rutgers-Camden’s highly regarded Teaching of Writing M.A. track. Therefore, while our students concentrate in fiction, poetry, or narrative nonfiction, they are encouraged to enroll in workshops and craft classes in genres and disciplines other than their own and with teachers who publish across genres.
Rutgers-Camden offers a mix of workshops, craft courses, literature courses, and the celebrated Rutgers Summer Writers’ Conference, a week and a half of intensive summer study with some of the most famous names in poetry, fiction, memoir, and publishing.
