Program Description
The MFA program at National University is a 20-month online program that combines the workshop experience with the flexibility of writing from your own home. Students specialize in poetry, fiction, non-fiction or screenwriting, but are also required to try other genres to expand their range. At the end of the program, students complete a full-length, publishable-quality manuscript with the guidance of a faculty mentor. MFA graduate students can take literature electives through the online MA English program as well as publish in and edit our literary journal, the GNU.
The National University MFA is a completely online program: there is no residency requirement. Students take one course at a time and can start the program in any month. Workshops are intensive two-month long courses, while electives are intensive one-month classes. All classes are run asynchronously, which means there are no set meeting times. Our students are aspiring writers who are often working adults with jobs, children, and other responsibilities. There is a great diversity of life-experience in the program, which makes for great writing.
