Naropa University MFA in Creative Writing

Average Overall Rating

Program Description

Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics offers two MFA degrees: the residency-based MFA in Writing & Poetics with a concentration in Poetry, Prose or Translation, and the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing.

The MFA in Writing and Poetics is a two-year, 49-credit graduate degree program, including four academic semesters and two summer sessions in which students study and work with a faculty of active and established writers. Small classes and a hands-on approach offer the kind of attention that will help one's writing and literary study develop significantly over the course of the program.

The MFA curriculum balances requirements in writing workshop courses, literature and cultural studies courses along with contemplative courses and university wide electives. When applying to the Writing and Poetics program, a student chooses to concentrate in prose, poetry or translation. This decision does not represent an exclusive commitment to one or another mode of writing but indicates a primary involvement with poetry, prose or translation over the course of the program.
