Macquarie University MA in Creative Writing

Average Overall Rating

Program Description

Our program offers students the opportunity to become part of a community of writers. Small seminars develop each student’s writerly imagination and skills. The program focuses on narrative, creative non-fiction and poetry.

The MA combines weekly writing workshops with reading, research and discussion-based learning. Individual supervision of a major work (30,000 words) is offered concurrently with the coursework units for International students. This major work might be a complete manuscript (eg collection of short stories) or part of a longer work (eg novel). The work is marked with a Reader’s Report by two readers, one a professional writer working in the same/similar genre. The Department regularly hosts visiting writers. Attendance at writing events, such as the Sydney Writers’ Festival, is encouraged. Taught by published writers with recognized and excellent skills in the teaching of creative writing, the program has many successfully published graduates, and is nationally acknowledged as a leader in the teaching of creative writing. International students are welcomed, and we have hosted students from Britain, Canada, Indonesia, Finland, Thailand and the USA.
