Louisiana State University MFA in Creative Writing
Average Overall Rating
Program Description
MFA students are the lifeblood of LSU’s Creative Writing Program. The fact that we offer full financial support to all MFA students attests to the high value we place on their work as practicing artists and teachers. Poets & Writers’ recent poll of MFA Programs ranked LSU 3rd nationwide in “Total Funding.”
In addition to working closely with our celebrated faculty, MFA students also have the opportunity to gain experience in the fields of literary publishing, arts administration, scholarship, and the practice of teaching. Many of our students have gone on to publish award-winning work after graduating.
Current MFA students run the lively and well-attended Small Bar Readings series. Many also work as editors of our graduate journal, the New Delta Review, and help organize the Delta Mouth Festival each February. Some go on to intern at The Southern Review or LSU Press.
Louisiana’s literary history is profound. Many people find that Baton Rouge’s proximity to New Orleans, the cypress swamps, and a still-vibrant Cajun culture makes for fertile creative grounds. Southern Louisiana’s numerous literary festivals and heritage sites make LSU an exhilarating place for writers to immerse themselves in their craft.
