Program Description
The goal of the Chapman University MFA program is the completion of a book-length thesis project. Though the program currently emphasizes fiction and poetry, theses may be in drama or screenwriting as well. Many MFA graduates teach creative writing at both two-year and four-year colleges. Chapman also offers a dual MA/MFA degree. It was created for students who wanted to combine the practice and study of creative writing with literary scholarship. The dual degree was specifically designed to meet the needs of students who intend to pursue a career in teaching English and creative writing at the university, community college or secondary-school level. Chapman is also the home of the John Fowles Center for Creative Writing which, in its 12 years has hosted such notable writers as: Salman Rushdie, Wole Soyinka, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Luisa Valenzuela, John Ashbery, Gioconda Belli, Dacia Maraini, David Antin, Alicia Kozameh, Edward Albee, Giorgio Pressburger, and Fanny Howe among many others. The Center also gives awards to the best writing by graduating MFA students.
